GREEN TEA vs. COLESTROL
(NaturalNews) Researchers at China's Sun Yat-sen University have discovered one of the mechanisms by which green tea helps lower cholesterol levels, as well as identified at least two of the specific chemicals responsible for the process.
Green tea has been an important component of traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. More recently, scientific studies have supported wide-ranging health benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels.
For example, a meta-analysis of 14 separate randomized, controlled trials conducted on more than 1,000 people, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011, found that people who consumed more green tea (or green tea extract) had significantly lower levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and total cholesterol than people who consumed less, while levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol were unchanged.
Most scientific research has focused on the polyphenolic compounds found in tea, many of which have been shown to either disrupt the body's synthesis of cholesterol or to reduce cholesterol absorption by the gut. Because green tea contains so many polyphenolic compounds, however, researchers have had a hard time determining which of these are responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effects.
Tea chemicals bind to cholesterol precursors
For the current study, researchers focused on two chemicals in the catechin family, which prior studies have indicated may have a strong effect on cholesterol synthesis. More specifically, the researchers tested four separate tea polyphenols in the presence of three separate enzymes that the body uses for cholesterol synthesis. They found that both (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) were able to inhibit the activity of all three cholesterol-related enzymes simultaneously.
Armed with this data, the researchers used a computer model to analyze the interactions between the enzymes and the tea compounds. They found that all three cholesterol-precursor enzymes contain triangle-shaped binding pockets. ECG and EGCG both have shapes that allow them to form strong chemical bonds with all three of these enzymes at the same time.
The researchers are now using the same techniques to analyze other chemicals found in green tea, Chinese herbs and food supplements for their lipid-lowering potential.
"This work fills an important need to define the binding of components of natural products to key enzymes that may contribute to major pharmacological activities of traditional nutritional medicine," said Basil Roufogalis of the University of Sydney, an expert on active components of herbal medicines who was not involved in the study. He noted that the research may eventually enable scientists to artificially synthesize drugs that mimic the activity of natural chemicals. This may allow doctors to intensify the cholesterol-lowering benefits of green tea without the side effects of other pharmaceutical drugs.
Green tea for whole body health
Studies have shown that tea benefits not just cholesterol levels but cardiovascular health in general. It also protects against neurodegenerative diseases. According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Leeds and published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2013, EGCG can actually halt the biological process believed to produce brain damage in Alzheimer's disease.
It has been shown to lower the risk of liver disease, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, tooth decay and cancers of the bladder, colon, esophagus, stomach and pancreas. Green tea may also help with weight loss and slow the progression of chronic diseases.
According to a study conducted by researchers at Tohoku University in Japan and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2012, people who drink five or more cups of green tea per day are less likely to develop frailty or disability as they age, and are more likely to remain independent.

NUTRISI PENTING SEMASA HAMIL
“Of all the rights of a woman, the greatest is to be a mother”, so said the influential writer and linguist Lin Yutang. But we must not forget that every right comes with a responsibility. A pregnant woman has the charge of nurturing the baby; who is entirely dependent upon her for survival. Diet and nourishment are central and should be taken seriously throughout the pregnancy.
Unlike the common saying that you need to eat for two when you are pregnant, the basics of healthy eating remains the same. However, due to the increased physiological needs the basal requirement of certain nutrients increases and they deserve special attention. Here are the most important ones that you need to keep track of.
Folate and folic acid:
Folic acid is a B vitamin that is naturally found in fruits, vegetables and legumes. Its synthetic form is called folic acid, and is taken as a supplement. Folate is important to prevent developmental problems in the baby’s nervous system (a.k.a. neural tube defects). Women need an additional 600-800 micrograms of folic acid a day for three months before conceiving and during first trimester of pregnancy. Its sources are leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, dried beans, liver, soya products and nuts like almond.
Calcium:
Calcium is important for strong bones and teeth and is vital for bothmother and baby. It helps in normal development of the nervous system and blood circulation. Calcium absorption rate naturally increases during pregnancy and therefore the requirement remains the same as for non-pregnant women, i.e. 1000 mg. per day. However, in teenage pregnancy the calcium requirements are higher, approx. 1300 mg per day. Dairy products are the best sources of calcium as they have a higher iron absorption ratio. Broccoli, kale, fortified juices and breakfast cereals are other sources.
Vitamin D:
Vitamin D improves calcium and phosphorous activity thus strengthening the bones and teeth. Deficiency of vitamin D during pregnancy may cause severe skeletal deformities at birth and may even have an impact on birth weight. The daily Vit D requirement is 400 IU of supplement and a decent exposure to morning sun. Fortified dairy and orange juice, eggs and fish liver oil are good sources of vitamin D. Fatty fishes are also rich in vitamin D, but the intake has to be limited to twice a week, as sea food poses an increased risk of mercury toxicity during pregnancy.
Protein:
Protein is critical during pregnancy as it supports the baby’s growth and the changes in mother’s body such as increased breast tissue and blood volume. The protein requirement significantly increases towards the end of second trimester and remains high till the end of gestation. Dietary sources of protein include lean meat, mature legumes, dairy, soy and nuts.
Iron:
Iron requirement increases significantly during the second and third trimester as the volume of mother’s blood increases to meet the needs of the placenta and a growing baby. Iron is also important for a strong immune system. Common symptoms of iron deficiency are constant fatigue, decreased blood volume and poor haemoglobin profile. Including iron rich foods like chicken, fish (in moderation) and whole eggs will help meet the daily iron requirements. Vegetarian food sources of iron include legumes, nuts and seeds, dried fruits and whole grains.
Zinc:
Zinc is important for the normal synthesis of DNA, the basic building block of cells. It is therefore, extremely important to maintain sufficient zinc intake to support the rapid cell growth that occurs during pregnancy. It also improves immunity, accelerates wound healing, and is required for strong bones and normal brain development. Fortified cereals and meat are good sources of zinc. Other sources include shellfish, poultry, beans, whole dried grains and dairy products.
Iodine:
Iodine is important during pregnancy as it is essential for the baby’s brain and nervous system development. The requirement of iodine nearly doubles during pregnancy and can be easily fulfilled by adding iodine rich food in daily diet. Dairy products, eggs, vegetables and sea foods are good sources; however the actual amount of iodine in these foods is dependent upon the real iodine content of the soil or water they are grown in. Although fish and other sea foods are good sources of iodine, their intake should be carefully monitored to avoid mercury toxicity. Iodine fortified foods like iodized salt is the easiest and most safe way to meet daily requirements.

KERADANGAN DALAM TUBUH
When Edgar Guest once said “There’s no diet list I'll follow that would rule out cherry pie.”, he probably was too charmed with the anti-inflammatory properties of this fruit.
Inflammation is an integral part of body’ immune system without which healing would be difficult. That’s a fact. Then why is anti-inflammatory diet so important? It is because, any hidden inflammation in the body is critical as almost every lifestyle disease is either caused or aggravated by it.
Here are some foods that are helpful in suppressing these hidden inflammations:
- Sour Cherry, also called as the tart cherry is one of the best anti - inflammatory food. It reduces inflammation significantly when consumed daily. Make sure that you go for the tart cherry and not the sweet one.
- Broccoli is rich in beta carotene, Vit. C and the flavonoid kaempferol. These make it a good choice when looking for anti-inflammatory foods.
- Red Tomato contains a compound called lycopene, which is specifically effective in reducing inflammation of lungs. You may also include homemade (preservative-free) tomato sauce to reap the benefits of Lycopene.
- The isoflavons found in Soy reduces levels of C- reactive protein in the blood hence fights inflammation.
- Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and other greens are good sources of Vit E. This vitamin protects the body from pro-inflammatory agents called Cytokines.
- Fatty Fish are rich in omega 6 fatty acids and are very powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Make sure that your diet includes fatty fishes like salmon, mackerel, tuna etc. at least three times a week.
- Berries contain anthocyanin, which is found to be helpful in reducing inflammation. Choose from the different varities available and enjoy their goodness.
- Fiber found in Whole grains, is found to reduce levels of C-reactive protein. C - reactive protein is a marker of inflammation in blood.
- Resveratrol found in Red Wine is an anti - inflammatory agent. It is believed that taking meals with red wine reduces risk of heart diseases and certain cancers.
- If you are a Tea lover, then shift your flavor from the regular tea to the more healthy ones like Green and White tea. These are rich in Catachins, antioxidants and play a vital role in reducing inflammation.
To help these foods help you get relief from the internal inflammations, ensure a liberal intake of fruits, vegetables and fluids. Stay away from processed and packed food, saturated fat, alcohol and always choose lean portions of meat.

KHASIAT DELIMA
Centuries back, Pomegranates were considered as exotic and precious fruits, stuffed with legendary powers. It truly is the perfect fruit with such amazing health benefits that it has actually evolved as a SUPERFOOD. Read on to find out more about its healing powers.

Its heals your heart
Apart from keeping arteries flexible and free of blockage, it also reduces the LDL levels in your blood. Its powerful antioxidants eat up free radicals that cause damage to the inner lining of the blood vessels. Taking pomegranate or its juice thrice a week helps in reducing the blood pressure and it hence finds a special place in the menus of people suffering from heart diseases.
Boosts Immunity
Pomegranate has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it the best choice to fight against viruses and bacteria. Its juice is considered to be supreme in boosting immunity.
Provides protection against cancers
Pomegranate contains powerful antioxidants. The main function of these antioxidants is to eliminate free radicals and thus inhibit the development of cancer and other diseases. They also act on the toxins to neutralize them and prevent the conversion of androgen to estrogen, a hormone that is crucial for development for breast cancer.
Improves gut function
Pomegranate juice controls thirst and induces hunger by improving stomach and liver functions. It stimulates secretion of enzymes that aid in digestion. Pomegranate juice is suitable in treating diarrheaand dysentery.
Reduces inflammation and joint pain
Pomegranates halt the enzymatic reactions that cause damage to the cartilage, even before they trigger a joint pain. Taking unsweetened pomegranate juice helps in reducing bone inflammation and subduesarthritis symptoms.
Beneficial In Prenatal Care
It is advantageous to take pomegranate juice during pregnancy. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties prevent the placenta from damage caused by the action of free radicals. Polyphenol, an antioxidant found in pomegranate, is known to protect the baby’s brain from damage caused by lack of oxygen that may occur at the time of birth. Regular consumption of pomegranate juice reduces the risk of premature deliveries too.
Pomegranate is an excellent fruit as it provides many nutrients in abundance, including beta-carotine potassium, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, iron, Vitamin B1 B2 and Vitamin C. And the most prized quality of this fruit is its large volumes of antioxidant. So why wait? Add its ornamental seeds to your salads, ice-creams, smoothies and desserts to enhance their appeal and nutrient quotient.

PENYAKIT GOUT
Henry VIII of England. What comes to your mind when you hear that name? Is it the 6 marriages? Is it the schism in church to get married 6 times? There are lots of historical tidbits that make this ‘Lord’ morbidly fascinating! My favorites are his diet and his health. The man lived a life of exorbitance, to re-confirm, 6 marriages! However, his love of food and drink were legendary. The man drank red wine and meat with almost militant fanaticism.
This zealotry towards food led him to be the sufferer of a disease which is making its comeback today in certain parts of the world. Gouty arthritis (Gout) is an inflammation of the small and medium sized joints of the body, caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood.
Henry suffered from it, and to a certain extent, we are all beginning to follow in his footsteps.
Gout is a lifestyle disease now. With the industrialization of the meat industry and the economics of food making meat so cheap and plentiful, parts of the population have begun to eat meat and fish with almost Tudor Era abandon, leading to the resurgence of this curious malady.
Let’s talk a little bit about gout, what causes it and how it can be managed.
During an attack of gout, crystals of sodium urate form on the insides of and around joints.
These crystals cause inflammation when the joints move, leading to severe pain, swelling and redness. The joint of the big toe is very commonly affected. Usually, the small and medium sized joints are first affected and then gout characterizes in pretty much every joint in the body.
An attack of gout can come on quite rapidly (within a day in most cases) and can last for up to 10 days on average.
What causes gout?
Gout is caused by a buildup of a common metabolic waste called uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is constantly manufactured by the liver and its normal fate is to be excreted, via the kidney. The liver makes this stuff especially when it has to break down a class of molecules known as purines. You will hear more about purines later.
If a high level of uric acid is created by the liver, or if the kidney cannot get rid of it fast enough, crystals of uric acid are formed causing a predictable result. Some of the crystals move from the joint cartilage and irritate the lining of the joint (aka the synovium), leading to the typical symptoms of gout. Other excess crystals pack together to form hard, slowly expanding lumps called tophi (singular: tophus).
The tophi cause progressive damage to the cartilaginous joints and the nearby bone. This causes progressive and irreversible damage to the affected joint.
What are the risk factors of gout?
- Age - More common as we age
- Gender - 3 times more likely in men
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Genetics: Having close relatives with gout (gout often runs in families)
- Having long-term kidney problems that reduce the elimination of uric acid
- A diet rich in purines, such as frequent consumption of sardines and liver
What are purines?
Let’s talk a bit about them. Purines are very important; they are organic molecules which make up the DNA of a person. The liver knows only one way of dealing with purines, when they are broken down and the waste needs to be removed, the liver creates uric acid.
To avoid gout, the most effective measure is to cut back on food that is rich in purines. Some of the foods rich in purines are:
- Organ meats such as liver, kidneys, sweetbreads and brains
- Meats including bacon, beef, pork and lamb
- Game meats such as venison, quail, turkey etc
- Any other meats in large amounts
- Anchovies
- Fishes such as sardines, herring and mackerel
- Scallops
- Gravy
- Beer
How does one manage gout?
Gout has to be treated with two main goals in mind:
- Reducing the symptoms of the attack: This can be done by using ice packs, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and painkillers (ibuprofen, naproxen etc). In extreme cases, alternative medication such as colchicine or powerful steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like corticosteroids may also be needed.
- Preventing future attacks: Since this is a lifestyle disease, managing one’s lifestyle will help in spades here. The first step would be to lose weight, if you are overweight. Secondly, avoid or cut down on purine rich foods.
There are some medications available which lower the uric acid levels in the blood but they have their own side effects and are to be the last resort, after lifestyle modification; allopurinol is one such drug.
